In Memoriam: Carmen Slater
My Aunt Carmen passed away on January 16. She was an outstanding woman and I have many many fond memories of her. I remember:
- being scared out of my wits by her mansion in Marinette. It was built by a logger baron and my cousins told me there were gargoyles in the attic.
- the green hummel of a poodle she gave me when I was young which I still have
- sleeping up in the neat attic room of her less-scary house in Oconomowoc
- lighting lots of candles with her (she loved them as much as I) around her house
- taking the row boat out to her lake behind her house and then taking short hikes into the woods
- eating at the Fox and Hounds with her (which as I just looked it up, it was sold after 62 years of business) and my parents
- when I was able to see her in Verona when I did some work for the Gates Foundation near Madison in 2003
I will miss you Aunt Carmen!
