Giant Frogs and Coping
I am still sort of in a state of shock after hearing about the guys who tried to commit suicide recently in Atlanta by cutting off their arms with a circular saw. There is a lot of speculation as to what was really going on - but apparently two major things happened: they learned recently that they were HIV + and that their business failed. You can read more about it here. This happened about 3 blocks from where I live. It’s a total eye-opener when things like this happen so close to you. Even though I live in an urban area, I would like to think that life is rosy for most people and they would not feel that this was the only option. Then, I drive on Ponce and see the crackheads roaming up and down the avenue… (now for anyone who isn’t from here, Ponce is a main road that leads to places like Whole Paycheck and Homo Depot - not just drugs). So yes I discover on occasion that I can be incredibly naive.
On another note, yes I am now going to New Zealand as well as Australia. I have been inundated with links to the Giant Frog - luckily I won’t be near Darwin.

Inundated? Really? Really?
I’m telling you, watch the Discovery channel. Australia is a mean place.

So, I’m torn: on the one hand, there’s that sobering realization whenever you hear about someone whose life was so unhappy that they decided to end it. On the other hand, I want to insult those guys for picking perhaps the Dumbest Suicide Method in the History of the World. I mean, seriously: hacking your arms off with a circular saw? One should never pick a suicide method that would leave one worse off if it fails than if it succeeds. Congratulations, you’re alive, only now you have no arms. To say nothing of leaving such a horrifically gruesome to confront the people who would discover you if it did succeed.
Holy Christ, that toad is gigantic. So, to recap, Australia has the world’s most poisonous snakes, poisonous jellyfish, thousands of species of poisonous insects, giant crocodiles, Great White sharks, man-eating wallabies…and now, dog-sized poisonous toads.
I’m taking Australia off my vacation list.
