New South Wales
I arrived in Sydney about 3 pm local time yesterday (Sunday.) After I checked into the hotel (a very nice place - the Menzies Sydney Hotel), I changed and walked down to Circular Quay (about 3-4 blocks from the hotel). This is where I got my first look a the famous Sydney Opera House, the Harbour and Harbour Bridge. What an amazing sight! I almost pinched myself to make sure I was really here.
Interestingly enough, I was sad to leave Melbourne and sort of not looking forward to come to Sydney. Once I saw the amazing harbour though, I was very excited to be here. I took a ferry over to Manly, which is on the North Head of the Harbour. As you ride the ferry, you get truly magnificent views of the Opera House - as well as the opening in the harbour between the Heads leading out to the Southern Pacific Ocean. Take a look at the photos on flickr - it is a memorable ferry ride.
After getting to Manly, I walked up an area called the Corso, which takes you between the wharf and the beach. I took off my shoes and stuck my feet in the ocean - it wasn’t that cold! It was nice to feel the sand in my toes and to walk along the beach at sunset. On the ferry ride back, I saw the Southern Cross up in the sky - very impressive to see it in person. And sort of intense to think we would never see it in North America.
I teach again tomorrow here in Sydney and then leave right for Brisbane after class via jet. I’m hoping to get to the beach while I’m there (especially on my birthday- which is Wednesday.)
All is good, though of course I miss Andrew and my family and friends back home.
